Now I know that for a fact that someone who studies media production as a degree, whether that be in film or TV production has been questioned by a friend or family member as to why on earth are you doing a media degree. On more than one occasion you have been told to stop colouring and watching films and get a real degree or job. This blog post is here to tell you to not listen to them!
A specific type of person is attracted to having a degree in creative media. This is someone who is naturally creative, however they are terrible at exams and course work is the way for us to get the results we need! They also don’t often know what they actually want to do within media production, but they know that they have a passion for media itself and they know that this is something they want to do! People are usually stuck between going to university or trying to just get a job as a runner on a production. So here are 5 reasons why you should have a degree in media production…
Whilst all of your other friends at university are slaving away complaining about the pressures of revising for exams. Media production students are also going to be working extremely hard, probably as hard as for example a psychology student. There’s just a big difference, media production students actually enjoy what they do. If you enjoy what you do you’re bound to be good at it!
You learn so much from a media production degree, but specifically about what career path you want to take within the media industry. You can then build on that skill whether it be editing, directing, producing or whatever you want to do. At the end of your 3 years you will have the skills to start a career in the media industry.
When you acquire the skills, it will then give you the confidence in yourself to know that you can be an editor or director. In fact, you will become one from the work you achieve throughout your three years at university! You can also make mistakes and learn from them. Whereas in industry if you make a mistake you’re likely to get fired or you just won’t be hired again.
You never know what achievements your fellow talented classmates may accomplish, who may in fact help you out in the future! Or you might be helping them out in the future! Nevertheless, you meet a lot of people through university including lecturers who are extremely experienced within the industry, which would be extremely hard to get these connections without the university.
You will also collect a strong portfolio form all the projects that you have worked on throughout the years. Placing you in a great position to go out into the industry and be a step above the people who don’t have a degree, as they just won’t have the facilities that the university can supply you with.
A degree in media production is a great stepping stone into getting the career you want in the media industry. At the end of the day it’s not all about the grade you get from this degree, it’s the skills and the connections you gain from your time at university that make it so worth your money and time!
