Technical Demonstrator

Hi, I am Dani. My role at Artswork Media as Technical Demonstrator includes training  and support in production technologies such as: video editing, camera operation, web production, planning for technical productions, photography, sound recording.

Workshops last term included -

Experimental moving image - both a discussion of the historical development and hands on session with techniques. This session has particular focus on moving image in theatre as the teams are working on a multi-media theatre performance to tour the country this summer.

Constructing the Documentary in the Edit - Looking at how dominant forms of documentary practices have developed, followed by a practical session on making interviews.

Creating a moving image web presence from scratch. Using Flash participants in the workshop will create a small website to showcase their current work.

Adobe Photoshop - A day long workshop on advanced techniques for image manipulation and colour consistant handling of images and frames from moving image work in a digital environment.

Self Employment - A short session on tax and running a small business.

This terms workshops will include - Camera: looking some of our favourite pieces of lens made work and exploring the processes used to make them. We will look particularly at different  storytelling styles including continuity and montage, and then find how composition in frame and time can be used within these. Sound for image: exploring the possibilities of sound to work along side image, finding the possibilities of equipment. Painting with Light: Looking at what can be done with controlling light. Cinematography: Using our new Canon 7d kit with lenses, filters, and grading, to create a look. Planning a production: a group workshop looking at the our current productions and assessing resources and time needs for each one.

Each workshop follows a similar pattern - the morning includes a talk with a discussion, followed by a hands on session, then a full practical session in the afternoon working on a small project using the techniques. We conclude the session with a feedback session.

Visiting speakers last term included -

Luci Gorell-Barnes - Animator , Graham Hogge - Film maker and worker at the Cube Microplex, Vic Proctor - Assistant Producer in television documentary production currently working for the BBC wildlife unit.

I specialise in participatory media production, facilitation, and training in the NGO sector.

In the last year I have directed a twenty four minute documentary for the Red Cross, a four projector site specific video installation for National Association of Local Government Arts Officers, and worked facilitating artists on the ArtLift project. I have worked as a facilitator and production technician on projects that have been presented at the Old Vic and Rotterdam Film Festival. I worked as director of photography on a long form drama film in set around La Paz, Bolivia. I like to do things at the cube microplex and I am based at the Epstein Studios in Bristol.

You can see some of the participatory work I have been involved with here - www.digitalstorytelling.org.uk My current research interests are in developing novel variations of methods for participatory media production - for example digital storytelling using mobile phones, dance mats, outdoor projections. I have a continuing practice mainly working with photography, moving image, and installation.

My MA is in Documentary Practice from Brunel Univeristy and my first degree in Fine Art Photography is from Glasgow School of Art. I have a qualification in teaching adults and have worked as a workshop leader for 10 years.
